On Saturday, November 11th, craft steps out of the studio and into the heart of Philadelphia with CraftNOW Create, a hands-on exploration of craft. All activities are free and family-friendly. Stop by and join in at any time!
Current Lineup:
Spinning Top Workshop
Presented by The Center for Art in Wood
The creation of these tops is an easy three step process that allows artists to take as much or as little time as they want to bring to life a beautiful piece.
Claymation
Presented by The Clay Studio
Join Clay Studio artists to create and animate clay characters using the art of stop motion. One person or a group of people can create a story, supply voices for characters, and share your creation with the world.
Collage Button Making
Presented by Fabric Workshop + Museum
Kids and adults can learn about artist Ann Hamilton’s multi-venue project, habitus, by using materials from and inspired by last year’s exhibition. Dyed fabrics, thread, and printed texts will be cut, collaged, and pressed into wearable souvenir buttons.
Hand Sewing Fabric YoYo’s with Sewing Machine Demonstration
Presented by Handcraft Workshop
Come learn the tried and true art of making yo yo embellishments. Our yo yo’s have vintage appeal with a fun modern twist. Use your yo yo’s to decorate pillows, tote bags, jewelry, and clothing. The possibilities are endless!
Nature Inspired Embroidery
Presented by Philadelphia Museum of Art
Inspired by their craft collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art will help visitors create a small masterpiece using embroidery techniques.
Digitizing Clay
Presented by Tyler School of Art
Watch live demonstrations of 3D printing in clay and see forms emerge from molds that were digitally fabricated.
Glass Blowing Studio Tours
Presented by University of the Arts
Watch a video of the UArts glass studio from the comfort of the Kimmel Center – and then head next door to see everything up close. Escorted tours leave every half hour.
Make-and-Take Jewelry
Presented by Wayne Art Center
Cathy Darlington will conduct a make-and-take with metal jewelry. Go home with a brand new piece of jewelry that you made for yourself!
About CraftNOW:
Craft NOW Philadelphia was launched in 2015 by a consortium of two dozen individuals, galleries, museums, universities, retailers and civic organizations whose mission is to promote Philadelphia as a national center of craft and making. Craft NOW serves as a citywide platform that celebrates Philadelphia’s unparalleled craft and artisanal legacy, showcases the area's many outstanding craft artists, galleries and other institutions, and highlights the City’s continuing role in defining the future of craft and making. Each year Craft NOW promotes and/or sponsors a series of exhibitions, public demonstrations, and educational programs occurring concurrently with the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Contemporary Craft Show in November. These cultural experiences are designed to animate the City, grow the local creative economy, and offer opportunities for the public to engage directly with the art of craft.
