COURTNEE ROZE

PRESENTS THE CULTURE IN SEI INNOVATION STUDIO

OCTOBER 26 – 28, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, August 31, 2017) –– The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is proud to welcome back 2015/16 Theater Resident and 2017 AfroPunk Battle of the Bands winner Courtnee Roze as she brings her new work, The Culture, to the SEI Innovation Studio October 26 -28, 2017. She will be performing the music she created in Philadelphia during her Kimmel Center Theater Residency. Roze is a percussionist, lyricist, writer, and bandleader based in New York.

She will take audiences on a musical journey through her life, highlighting various influences that have inspired her sound-- hitting on issues such as racism and love. A symbol of female empowerment playing a powerful instrument, Roze’s music is a fusion of afro beats, funk, and spoken word. The Culture will not only feature a diverse musical soundtrack, but will include non-traditional vocal patterns, dance and  tactical staging.

“It is an honor to present Courtnee Roze’s The Culture, a work she began developing during our 2015/16 Theater Residency under the guidance of our producing Artistic Director Jay Wahl,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “Self-described as ‘cut from a different cloth,’ we know Roze’s powerful presentation and themes will entice a broad and diverse audience to the Center.”

Roze has performed and collaborated with celebrated musicians including J. Cole, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, and Tony Award winner Lachanze.  She continues to deliver diverse and memorable performances, instilling that drums and percussion are the heartbeat of music.

This is a designated BYO performance, a new feature at select performances in the SEI Innovation Studio. Acceptable forms of BYO are 6-pack of beer and/or 750ml bottles of wine only; no liquor or open containers are permitted. Limit of one (1) 750ml bottle of wine OR one (1) six-pack of beer per two patrons. Corkscrews and rolling coolers are not permitted. Ice, cups and corking service available at venue at no cost.
