Jazz Residency Project: Doug Hirlinger, composer and percussionist, is compiling a group of artists including Ursula Rucker, M’Balia Singley, Tim Motzer, and John Swana who together are writing a suite entitled “Dear Philadelphia.” This new work is informed by dialog between the artists concerning the changes occurring in the city through gentrification and other processes.

"After a few years away I’m happy to be living in Philadelphia again with my family, raising my kids here, and engaging with the city artistically, socially, and otherwise. The changes in the feel and look of this city have caught my attention and I’ve been discussing these changes with my collaborators, Tim Motzer, Ursula Rucker, M’Balia Singley, and John Swana in regards to the effect on communities, neighborhoods, traditions, and the jazz and creative music scenes. These discussions are shaping our work as we sculpt our suite, 'Dear Philadelphia.’” ~ Doug Hirlinger

The Jazz Residency Program is generously supported by the Apgar-Black Foundation and the Presser Foundation.
