ILLUSTRIOUS AUSTRIAN ENSEMBLE STUDIO DAN COMBINES COMPOSITION AND IMPROVISATION IN U.S. PREMIERE OF INVENTIVE MOTHERS: A TRIBUTE TO FRANK ZAPPA  DURING THE KIMMEL CENTER’S PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS JUNE 2 & 3, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, April 30, 2018) – Making their U.S. premiere at the 2018 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA), Austrian ensemble Studio Dan will perform Inventive Mothers: A Tribute to Frank Zappa at the Kimmel Center’s SEI Innovation Studios on Saturday, June 2, 2018 and Sunday, June 3, 2018. Far more than a tribute to Zappa’s work, this ensemble brilliantly combines composition and improvisation, exploring beyond the bounds of traditional genres from classical to rock and from jazz to doo-wop. The performance is as illustrious as it is unique, with arrangements of classic tunes performed with an impressive display of unconventional instruments – even a bicycle!

“Studio Dan’s contemporary interpretation of classic songs is precisely the creative programming we seek to showcase during PIFA 2018,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “Audiences will love this celebrated ensemble, making their U.S. premiere at this year’s festival.”

Studio Dan is the only Austrian large ensemble belonging neither to the jazz big band mainstream, nor to the strictly interpretive contemporary chamber music culture. Founded by Daniel Riegler in 2005 for the JazzWerkstatt Wien’s first festival, the group started as a big band but has since morphed into a flexible new ensemble, performing in various arrangements based on the current project. Studio Dan’s music operates on the borders of many diverse subgenres of contemporary music, including but not limited to, new music, jazz, rock, and improvisation.  Inventive Mothers: A Tribute to Frank Zappa showcases iconic Zappa pieces, uniquely arranged by Riegler for this performance.

Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: La NOCHE (May 7, 2018, Commonwealth Plaza), Cristal Palace (June 1-10, 2018, Banks of Schuylkill River), Doggie Hamlet (June 3-4, 2018, Fairmount Park at Belmont Plateau), and Tape Riot (June 5-8, 2018, city locations revealed to ticket buyers), and ¡La NOCHE CUBANA! (June 6, 2018 Commonwealth Plaza)
