THE KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS
TONY AND EMMY AWARD® WINNER JOHN LEGUIZAMO’S HILARIOUS
ONE MAN SHOW LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS
JULY 19-20, 2019
“Leguizamo’s genius continually surprises!”- DEADLINE
“A funny, surprisingly poignant, and startlingly touching quest for the perfect Latino hero.”
– THE NEW YORK TIMES
“John Leguizamo is back, as smart, provocative, bracing- and wise- as ever. In this dazzling comedic-philosophic evening of laughter, his Latin lesson is a treat.” - THE HUFFINGTON POST
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, June 13, 2019) – The Kimmel Center Cultural Campus welcomes theater’s most prolific modern Latino playwright John Leguizamo for his irreverent one-man show Latin History for Morons at the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20, 2019. When his son gets a school assignment on heroes, John seizes the chance to teach him all about the great figures of the Latino world. But once he sets out on his irreverent crash course across three continents and 3,000 years of history—from conquistadores to cumbia, Montezuma to Menudo, and taking on the characters in all of it—he uncovers provocative truths that shock even him.
“John Leguizamo is a theatrical powerhouse whose skill at blending social relevancy into art is unparalleled,” said Ed Cambron, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “He has also built a career around breaking down stereotypes, using humor to spur audience interest in relevant issues facing the Latin community today. We are committed to presenting programming on our Cultural Campus with artists from varied backgrounds, reflecting the diverse tapestry of Philadelphia audiences.”
The critically-acclaimed Latin History for Morons marks Leguizamo’s sixth one-man venture onto the stage. The play is inspired by the near total absence of Latinos from his son’s American History books. After a sold-out run at The Public Theater and a record-breaking engagement at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, the show wowed Broadway audiences with an extended run at Studio 54.
Touted as one of the most incisive, insightful, and entertaining personalities on stage today, John Leguizamo’s decades-long career spans stage and screen. In addition to his success on Broadway with his array of brilliant solo productions, Leguizamo has featured in many film roles such as Casualties of War, Die Hard II, Super Mario Bros, anda Golden Globe nominated performance in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. In more recent years, he has been most widely recognized for his roles in Moulin Rouge!, the John Wick franchise, and as the voice of Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age franchise. His plethora of professional fortunes on Broadway include Mambo Mouth, Spic-O-Rama, Freak, Sexaholix…a Love Story, and Ghetto Klown.
Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Hannah Gadsby: Douglas (June 23, 2019, Merriam Theater) and Smart Funny & Black with Amanda Seales (July 21, 2019, Merriam Theater).
