NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE! SPEAKER SERIES

CONTINUES WITH NASA ASTRONAUT

TERRY VIRTS AND VIEW FROM ABOVE

ON THE KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS

JANUARY 17, 2019

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Philadelphia, PA, November 15, 2018) –The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is thrilled to welcome NASA astronaut and former International Space Station Commander Terry Virts as he shares breathtaking photos and videos taken during his seven months in space.  Part of the new National Geographic Live! speaker series, Terry Virts’ View from Above will transport audiences from the Kimmel Center’s Merriam Theater to outer space on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 8:00 p.m.  Experience some of the magnificent images that are featured in the National Geographic book View From Above and the IMAX film A Beautiful Planet.

“Our brand new National Geographic Live speaker series gives audiences the opportunity to view stunning images from our planet and beyond while hearing the stories from behind the camera with some of National Geographic’s groundbreaking photographers,” said Anne Ewers, President and CEO of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “Terry Virts literally takes us out of this world and onto the International Space Station to take a different look at our beautiful planet – a once-in-a-lifetime experience!”

Terry Virts is a veteran of two spaceflights, a two-week mission on board the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2010 and a 200-day flight to the Space Station in 2014-2015.  His seven months in space included three spacewalks, piloting the Space Shuttle, performing science experiments, and working closely with multiple international partners, including Russian Space Agency cosmonauts during some of the most stressful US-Russian relations since the Cold War.  While Terry was in space he took over 300,000 still images and was an integral part of filming and starring in the recent IMAX film A Beautiful Planet.

His desire is to have a global impact on people through speaking, combining the awesome experiences of launch and landing and spacewalks with the sublime views and surprising perspectives he gained on our planet’s environment and global health.  His speaking topics include risk and crisis management, the importance of strategy and vision, innovation, and intercultural leadership.  Terry speaks French and Russian and has lived and worked extensively abroad, bringing a unique and powerful perspective on today’s global environment.

Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include:An Evening with Bob Woodward(January 10, 2019, Merriam Theater); Professor Brian Cox: Universal Adventures in Space & Time (April 28, 2019, Verizon Hall), and National Geographic Live!
