KIMMEL CENTER CULTURAL CAMPUS PRESENTS

GRAMMY®-WINNING CHICK COREA TRILOGY WITH CHRISTIAN

MCBRIDE AND BRIAN BLADE

OCTOBER 27, 2019

“A luminary, ebullient and eternally youthful.”
THE NEW YORK TIMES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (Philadelphia, PA, September 9, 2019) –The Kimmel Center Cultural Campus welcomes the Chick Corea Trilogy with Christian McBride and Brian Blade to Verizon Hall on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. This powerhouse collaborative brings together 22-time Grammy®-winning Jazz legend Chick Corea; 6-time Grammy®-winning Jazz bassist and Philadelphia native, Christian McBride; and one of the most requested and recorded figures in the music world today & widely respected drum master, Brian Blade. This unforgettable performance is part of the Kimmel Center’s 2019/20 Jazz Season.

This trio’s first outing, 2014’s landmark triple-disc set, earned Trilogy two Grammy® Awards. Trilogy documents this trio interpreting classic Chick compositions, previously unreleased pieces by the pianist, an array of jazz standards, and even a Prelude by Alexander Smith.

Chick Corea is a living legend and has been at the forefront of the Jazz community for more than half a century, and we are delighted to have the unparalleled talent of his trilogy as a staple of this year’s 2019/20 Jazz season,” said Ed Cambron, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “Each season in this series, and even moreso through our ongoing Jazz Residency program, we foster the presentation of innovative jazz, an artform that has – and will continue to have – a storied legacy in Philadelphia.”

Chick Corea is one of the most cherished artists in the music industry, attaining iconic status. The keyboardist, composer, and bandleader is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, as well as the fourth-most nominated artist in Grammy® Awards history with 63 nominations, in addition to a number of Latin Grammys. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career since playing with the genre-shattering bands of Miles Davis in the late ’60s and early ’70s.

Philadelphia native Christian McBride is a four-time Grammy®-winning jazz bassist. Likened to a force of nature, McBride fuses the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. Powered by a relentless energy and a boundless love of swing, McBride’s path has described a continuous positive arc since his arrival on the scene. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today.

Brian Blade, the multi-talented young veteran, is already widely respected in the jazz world as drummer/composer/leader of Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band, with whom he has released three albums. He is also known as the drummer for many heroes of the music world, including Daniel Lanois, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Wayne Shorter, Seal, Bill Frisell, and Emmylou Harris. Brian Blade was born on July 25, 1970 in Shreveport, Louisiana. During his childhood, Brian would hear Gospel music in his everyday life, as well as the music of Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, and the Staple Singers.

Other featured upcoming performances at the Kimmel Center Cultural Campus include: Black Violin (November 8, 2019, Merriam Theater), An Evening with Sutton Foster (November 22, 2019, Merriam Theater), Béla Fleck & The Flecktones (December 3, 2019, Verizon Hall), Rachael & Vilrary (December 13, 2019, Perelman Theater), and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (May 17, 2020, Academy of Music.)
